Education and Resources Specialists (EaRS) Mentoring: Team Page

Group co-leaders are: Shelby Smith (shelby@jefferson.wsu.edu) and Jane Laptad (janenotinks@live.com)

Selected project: Community Youth mentoring.

The Education and Resources Specialists (EaRS) team (name of
this Mentoring Team) participated in judging the Senior Projects for
the Class of 2011. There were eight folks from the committee and two
last minute recruits.

On Thursday following the presentations, the Class of 2011 graciously and hilariously met with Laurie Nieman, Chuck Gibilisco, and Jane Laptad to talk about the project and presentation process. They discussed the issues they encountered and things that would have helped them.

A Power Networking meeting with the Class of 2011 is scheduled for 9 June 2011 at 9:20 a.m. That is a Thursday morning. Muffins, donuts, juice, soft drinks, etc. will be served. The purpose of the PowNet is to give the class a head start on project selection, mentor selection, and on beginning work on their papers and projects if they so desire.

EaRS team is meeting on Tuesday evening May 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the
Quilcene Community Center.
The purpose of the meeting is to finalize
the PowNet plans.

-- Jane

Past meetings: Wednesday April 16th and Wednesday April 30th at 6pm at the Community Center.

Co-chairs Shelby Smith (shelby@jefferson.wsu.edu) &
Jane Laptad (jlaptad@embarqmail.com) have this team off to a fantastic
start. We’re off and running.  For its 2011 start-up “project”, the team will pair up adult mentors – YOU could be one!! – with next year’s HS Seniors, to
select and carry out the BEST set of “culminating projects” the Senior
Class has ever seen.  These final-year projects are now a State
requirement for graduation, although the Quilcene District required
completion of Senior Projects for years prior to the State catching
on.

Jane discussed the team’s ideas with the HS teachers & staff, and
presented the plan to the School Board at Wednesday’s Board meeting.
Everyone has given thumbs-up to our ideas!  And they’re eager to have
the kids choose “community improvement” projects.  Sounds like a
perfect match for the Quilcene Conversations activists!

The team has also been invited to “judge” THIS YEAR’S senior projects,
which will give us a good feel for the current process, and help us
insert some new ideas into next year’s process.  We’ve also been asked
to establish and manage a “writing clinic” for the kids to get a good
start on the paper that must be part of each project.  Any writing
experts out there want to help with this in the fall?  Another “ask”
which the team may take on is a mini-career day for this year’s
Juniors.  I bet there are folks out there who’d be happy to share
their career experience with the kids.

If you want to help the High School kids write their own ticket into college and
careers, be there!
