Ninth Night Program for Tuesday, August 9 at 7 pm

Local pioneer Japanese-American farmers - their history, culture and cuisine - will be the focus at Quilcene Conversations' Ninth Night this Tuesday, August 9 at 7 pm at the Quilcene Community Center.

Everyone is invited to attend and to bring Japanese dishes for the pot luck that follows the showing of the featured films. (see sample recipes below for inspiration!)

Pamela Roberts, Interim Director of WSU Jefferson County Extension, will show her recently completed video documentary, The Kawamotos of Lake Leland. The film features a 30-minute long interview with local farmer, Ray Kawamoto, including historical photos from his family, the archives of the Quilcene School and the Library of Congress.

The Kawamotos of Lake Leland helps us understand more about the real life challenges of a local Japanese farm family. Included are their experiences during the WWII Japanese internment camps and the impact it had on their farms and on their lives. Local residents, Ray Kawamoto and his wife Margie, will be the honored guests at this event along with their family members.

If time permits, Snow Falling on Cedars will also be shown. The story of Snow Falling on Cedars was written by David Guterson, who became aware of the history of Japanese-American farm families through his experiences living on Bainbridge Island.

Even if you DON'T want to bring a Japanese dish, please be sure you come on Aug 9th and bring your family and friends.

This will be a night of Quilcene history, and a special tribute to our neighbors the Kawamotos.

See you there!
