2011 things done at the campground and recreation park, Part 2:

  • Tennis court fence got re-secured at the bottom with fence ties.
  • The edges all around were roundup'ed, including the weeds inside and the weeds around and inside the playground.
  • The front apron by 101 got weed whacked along with the community sign board area.
  • Last week the tennis backboard got repainted and the skateboard units got a top coat of green as well.
  • The big sign board to hold the area map has been finished, painted Parks brown with a white border line and awaits the area map which is under development.

Thanks to everyone who has pitched in and helped make the campground beautiful and who helped with the grand reopening.  And thanks to all who are participating in the Quilcene Conversations activities because this has helped the community to bring together the various aspects of our assets.
We had a great Grand Re-opening  ceremony with  free hot dogs, coffee and donuts, kids games, three commissioners came and spoke and there was a native american blessing ceremony as well that many people enjoyed. The weather was perfect!!!

People stop by and use the park on a daily basis and one thing I want to point out is that since Quilcene Conversations has begun its cleanups I've noticed several properties along 101 coming into town have started serious  cleanups and mowing. The efforts are spreading.

4-10-11: Still more progress at the campground. Today the bathroom got painted inside and the outside partition as well. Several remaining piles of debris were removed. The Playground was de-littered of cigarette butts and raked, and a couple of campsites were raked clean.

Yesterday I crunched apart four old stumps with the backhoe. The roads through the campground have been graveled after the potholes were filled, this by the county road crews. Also the front panels of the skateboard jumps were painted and now look great.

(County Commissioner) Phil Johnson was by yesterday and marveled at
how nice things were looking and is looking forward to attending the
opening ceremony when there will be a Native American blessing for the
campground and Lions club hot dogs and some games.  Everyone is
invited to attend this historical event -- APRIL 23 beginning at
10:30am.

The folks beautifying Quilcene were hard at work by the totem pole park in front of the school and that looks fantastic too.

Thanks for all the help, glad to see the community so enthusiastic.

Update 3/28/11:
If you haven’t driven past the Quilcene park / campground (next to the Community Center) in the past few weeks, AND you haven’t been reading the Leader, you may not know – THE PARK IS OPEN!  Clayton White (cwseafoam@embarqmail.com) and his amazing team of hard workers has transformed the park.  Go take a look – you’ll be pleased and proud.  And this team was THE FIRST TEAM ACROSS THE FINISH LINE for completion of projects chosen at the Feb. 19 community-wide meeting.  Congratulations and heartfelt community thanks to Clayton and his team.
The campsites are spotless, the children’s playground is safe and oh-
so-appealing, the picnic shelter is once again a great place for your
next family reunion, and glory-be, the potholes in the entrance
driveway have disappeared!

Now for the FESTIVITIES.  Clayton and his team are planning a Grand
(Re)Opening Ceremony to coincide with the community-wide meeting on
April 23.  The day full of presentations, games, activities, music and
food -- and the exact timing of everything -- are still being
confirmed, but go to your calendar right now and SAVE THE DATE – April
23 – for everyone in Quilcene to celebrate our park and campground
back in business.

If you’re a party planner (or would like to hone your party-planning
skills), send Clayton an email or call him at 360-765-0109.  The more
capable people (esp those with connections!) who sign up to help, the
more spectacular our Grand Opening Event will be.

Update Saturday, March 19th:
We had our first successful work party today. A tremendous amount got done, raking and shoveling into a trailer and dumping. Many areas are beautifully cleaned of wind blown debris and dropped pinecones. The place looks great!

Some people brought goodies and coffee and apple juice so we had great treats. There will be more to come, little work parties to clear low brush that occludes visibility into the park, and painting over grafitti and re-painting tennis court backstop... stuff like that for those who missed the opportunity today. All this is a boost to the community in so many ways.

I saw folks just driving through this afternoon just looking, others were picnicking over by the children's playground. We're getting noticed and the place is being used. Thanks again folks. - Clayton

We have met with the Park Board members and volunteers, and ironed out the needs to be met for opening the park on a day use basis and an overnight basis. Obviously there are more hurdles to overcome and we will need to generate funds for the future. There are a number of smaller projects that have been started, including changing some signs and plant removal to make signs more visible, playground rejuvenation and repair, other plant removal to allow visibility of the park in general, and bathroom maintenance and road repair.

Quilcene Lions helped coordinate this repair work. Thank you!!
Gravel is from Penny Creek Quarry (360) 683-9225, Doug Reeves spread it out for us - Thanks very much to all for this much more welcoming driveway!!! It's appreciated!
Clayton White's trailer full of plant debris to go to the dump - lots of Scotch Broom.
Charlie Brown of Brown Custom Iron helping to make the playground safer for the kids - Thanks Charlie!
Damaged playground slide, ready for removal.

3/3/11 - THE PARK IS OPEN!
